在未有海底隧道、大橋和鐵路之前，穿梭於港九和新界各海岸的渡輪航線星羅棋佈。以城市為中心的交通規劃，把人和物的交流限制在城─鄉之間，忽視了海洋的開放性。從島嶼和海岸的優勢出發，縱横交錯的街渡和横水渡，曾經連結起鄉村和墟市，讓島嶼互通有無，而不需要以城市作為中介。

島嶼研究網絡（香港）團隊航向坪洲，回顧她與其他海岸社區的連繫，及其所曾承載，並繼續轉運的人、事、物。看看除了城市之外，島嶼還可以向哪個方向航行？

Before the era of tunnels, bridges, and railways, the Kaito ferry was a vital lifeline, connecting the waters of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. Though city-centered transportation planning often limited the movement of people and goods to the urban-rural divide, the ocean’s openness offered boundless opportunities. Harnessing the advantages of islands and coasts, the intricate network of street and cross-water ferries united villages and markets, allowing them to thrive without the constraints of city intermediaries.

As the ISNHK team journeys towards Peng Chau, they reflect on its profound connections with other coastal communities and the rich tapestry of people, events, and goods it continues to transport among the islands. Together, let’s explore the new horizons the islands can navigate beyond the city.
